Police seize cars housing rats

Eleven old cars had to be impounded by police after giant rats chose them as new homes and threatened to attack pedestrians as they walked by.

Police discovered 25 large rats were living in cars in Soweto, a southern region of Johannesburg, South Africa.

Wayne Minnaar, the chief superintendent of the Johannesburg police, said: ‘We’ve had to deal with vicious dogs before but not with rats.’

People walking past the cars in Soweto complained that the rats would get vicious and try to attack them, but no injuries have been reported.

Police said the owner will have to pay 525 rand (£37) per vehicle to get them towed away and stored.
