Naked Burglar Surprises Smyrna Residents

A man who broke into a Smyrna home in the middle of the night decided to stay a while and make himself comfortable. Police said they had never seen anything like it.

Rommates Debra Cofer and Tanya Williams heard a noise at 3:30 a.m. Thursday and called police.

Shortly before cops arrived, Williams noticed something strange. A pair of men’s pants was laying on the stairway that led to her basement. In addition to finding pants, with a wallet still in them, the women heard strange noises coming from the basement.

“I could hear him moaning and making these noises it was like really weird,” Williams said.

Police said Billy Cox, 33, who was clearly intoxicated had broken into the home, took off his clothes and decided to rest up in the basement.

“He didn’t seem drunk. He seemed like he was messed up or something,” Coffer said.

Cox did not only lose his pants in the ordeal. He lost piles of change that he scattered around the outside of the home.

Investigators were trying to determine if Cox got the money from a sandwich shop that was broken into the same night.

Cofer said before being escorted out by police, Cox only wanted one thing

“He’s saying ‘I need my pants on.’ well you should have thought about that before you took’em off in somebody else’s home,” Cofer said.

Both women said they were relieved Cox didn’t harm them. They would like to ask him one question though.

“I don’t know what he was thinking. I’d like to know what he was thinking though,” Williams said.

Cox faces burglary charges for the home break-in. As far as the sandwich shop break-in, charges haven’t been filed and officers were still looking over evidence. It appears he is the main suspect in that case as well.

Investigators have not said if any other suspects will be questioned in connection with the crimes.

This was first time Cox was arrested in Smyrna. However, police said the evidence against him in the home break-in is solid.
